Impact assessment is the application of a group of procedures to ensure that the implications of any decisions are taken into account before the decisions are made. Runnymede Borough Council uses these procedures to consider its own and other impacts on the sustainable development objectives of the Borough.

Sustainable development is commonly defined by what has become known as the Brundtland Report definition:

'Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need'.

This Website follows the stages of the SA/SEA process , the different levels of which can be viewed to the left.

Runnymede's approach
............................................................................

The impact assessment team has carries out a number of functions linked to the assessment and promotion of sustainable development in the Borough.

An in-house Sustainability Appraisal and Strategic Environment Assessment of the Council's emerging Local Development Framework will offer direction on the most sustainable options for development.

Planning applications to be considered by the Council are screened for environmental impacts, and where relevant, their impacts are assessed and considered under the Environmental Impact Assessment and/ or the Habitat Directive regulations.

The Runnymede State Report provides information that describes the Borough and can be used in setting priorities for sustainable development, for example the average property price against average earnings.

New and evolving legislation is monitored for applicability to the functions and operations of the Council.
