A sustainability appraisal (SA) considers the likely impacts that a plan or policy will have on the sustainability of an area. It also explores ways of promoting any positive impacts, and managing and monitoring potentially negative impacts the plan or policy may have on sustainable development objectives.

Relevance to Runnymede Borough Council ............................................................................

The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 requires a Sustainability Appraisal be conducted on documents contained within the Local Development Framework (LDF).

The Council is conducting an in-house Sustainability Appraisal and Strategic Environment Assessment (SA/ SEA) of its LDF. This framework will guide future spatial development in Runnymede, while the SA/SEA will offer direction on the most sustainable options for development.

Runnymede's approach
............................................................................

The LDF and SA/SEA processes are working synchronously to ensure that the documents are as relevant as possible. The next documents to be produced in the SA/ SEA process are:

Final scoping report (15th June 2005)

Draft sustainability and environment report (15th September 2005)

These SA/SEA stages are planned in conjunction with the Local Development Scheme (pdf)
