A strong educational background supports growth in the local economy through offering opportunities for many different skills and grows the economy in a stable way that is less vulnerable to market variations in any one industry type.

Runnymede objectives and indicators

Runnymede's sustainability objective is to raise educational achievement levels across the region and develop opportunities for everyone to acquire the skills to find and remain in work.

There is a fairly even range of different levels of qualifications across the borough, although the average Level 2 and 3 qualification standard compared to the rest of the UK. Whilst the majority of Runnymede ranks in the top two quartiles of the country, there are small pockets of low educational levels in parts of Chertsey St Anns, Englefield Green West and Addlestone North. Chertsey St Anns is ranked at 3,144 out of 32,482, where 1 is the most deprived in the country.

The number of adults with poor literacy and numeracy is low compared to the South East and Surrey averages. Map 1.2 describes the different types of educational facilities in the borough, and their proximity to settlements.

Runnymede actions

Although Runnymede Council is not directly linked to its schools, it works in partnership with them in a number of ways particularly the Yellow School Bus programme and encouraging Eco Schools participation.
