Runnymede objectives and indicators
Runnymede's sustainability objectives are twofold:
1. To improve efficiency in land-use through the re-use of previously
developed land; and,
2. To reduce the risk of flooding , including climate change impacts,
and the resulting detriment to public well-being, the economy and
the environment.
The borough makes efficient use of its previously developed land,
with 96% reuse compared to 68% in Surrey. This high performance
protects greenbelt land and limits the extent of derelict land,
which amounts to 11.47 hectares, or 0.1% of the borough.
Over a quarter of properties in the borough are at risk from a
1 in 100 year flooding event, and five planning applications have
been granted against the advice of the Environment Agency in the
last year. Both the total number of properties at risk, and the
number of new properties at risk are higher than UK average. Runnymede’s
flood zones are mapped in 4.1 below.
