Access to services and facilities increases the opportunities for local communities, and the economic growth of the area. However, some types of travel mode emit more greenhouse gases and other polluants that can harm local communities and the environment.

Conversely, cycling, walking, using public transport or car sharing all limit these negative impacts. The map opposite shows the different travel routes available in the Borough.

Have a look at Your Runnymede to see what you can do to reduce the negative impacts of your travel.

Runnymede objectives and indicators

Runnymede's sustainability objective is to reduce road congestion and pollution levels by improving travel choice and reducing the need to travel by carry/ lorry.

Runnymede is well served by major roads, but suffers some areas of congestion. Traffic flows have decreased 3% since 1998, contrary to the Surrey trend of increased traffic flow by nearly 5% over the same period. However, car use in Runnymede has historically been high with 69% of people travelling to work by car compared to 64% average in Surrey and 61% average in England.

Nineteen schools and 29 businesses in the Borough have a travel plan.
