LEISURE SERVICES

The Division manages, promotes and plans all Leisure Services and facilities directly provided by the Council and encourages leisure and recreational provision by private and voluntary organisations within the Borough. It develops local interest and participation in leisure and recreational pursuits. In its management of all amenities and facilities, it aims to provide a high quality, attractive and safe environment for residents and visitors. The Division is involved in advising the Council on all leisure and recreational matters and will carry out the Council's policies as to the nature and level of service to be provided.

Arts Development: Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Borough Council acts as an enabler of the Arts in providing a budget for Arts activities, which is distributed after recommendation by the Arts Development Steering Group. Projects that will be considered by the group include public art performance and sculpture, arts activities designed to encourage young people and arts activities that target disadvantaged groups

Cemetery Service Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Cemetery Registrar located in the Civic Offices deals with the grant of burial rights in the Council's Cemeteries and makes the necessary liaison arrangements for funerals etc, a task requiring both efficiency and sensitivity to the needs of bereaved families. The physical management and maintenance of the Cemeteries is carried out with parks and amenities as mentioned below.

Chertsey Museum Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Museum is run by the Council in premises in Windsor Street, Chertsey, provided by the Trustees of the Olive Matthews collection. The Museum's emphasis is on local and social history as well as the housing of the important Matthews collection of period costume. The Museum offers a range of services including exhibitions and displays, talks, interpretation, identification of objects and education services.

Leisure Development Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Leisure Development team are concerned with the development and promotion of the Borough's play leadership and SPLASH (youth activity) schemes, including the obtaining of outside support and sponsorship for them. Leisure Development also includes the Sports Development role which includes giving support to the local Sports Council, and encouraging and looking at opportunities for developing sporting initiatives in the Borough. Emphasis is put on opening up access, networking and developing effective partnerships as well as giving advice on sports related grants, and preparation of the Runnymede Sports Directory.

Monitoring of Contracts and Quality Upwards Icon Select another Task

Staff will monitor the performance of any services contracted out, or which are performed in house after a successful CCT bid such as Egham Sports Centre. Advice and assistance will also be given to relevant other Leisure Managers on the preparation of peformance and quality specifications, and their monitoring.

Parks and Amenites Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Parks and Amenities staff are responsible for management and maintenance of the Council's parks, open spaces, allotments and cemeteries. The Parks and Amenities section also arranges for the bookable spaces in parks, Council housing amenity space, and similar small areas not provided directly for public leisure purposes. Where contractors are used, staff will monitor the quality of performance.

Support Services Upwards Icon Select another Task

A number of crucial support roles are performed by the Support Services Manager and two support staff. Essential clerical and administrative services are provided here for the Parks including the booking of pitches and allotments as well as providing a general clerical support for the reset of the division. As well as these the Section provides valuable I.T. support in liaision with the I.T. Section, co-ordinates the Division's Training needs, produces the Division's management information, co-ordinates corporate Leisure Advertising and the printing of a range of Leisure information leaflets.

Public Halls Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Council manages three public halls within the Borough, which can be hired for a wide range of uses from wedding parties to bridge evenings. Many of the halls have stages making them suitable for dramatic productions. They are also suitable for training events, conferences, children's activities and general community events.

Sports Centres Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Council has its own substantial Leisure centre - Egham Leisure Centre -, at Vicarage Road, Egham offering a wide range of indoor and outdoor "dry" sporting activities. AbbeyFit Leisure Centre at School Lane, Addlestone has been provided on the premises of Jubilee High School under a dual use arrangement with the School and the County Council, and includes an open air swimming pool. Both sports centres are managed in-house, in Egham's case following a successful compulsory competitive tendering bid.

Tourism Upwards Icon Select another Task

The Council recognises the need to ensure visitors to the Borough are kept well informed of the facilities and sites to see, although only minimal resources can be devoted to this at present. To this end a Mini Tourist Guide and where to stay information is published.
There is also a Tourist Information Centre at Thorpe Park.
