local LOTTERIES licensing

Licences for Lotteries

Organisations with a (head) office address in the Runnymede Borough who wish to hold raffles or lotteries, must be registered with Runnymede Borough Council, under the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976 (as amended).

The following exemptions apply :-

Private Lotteries

Private lotteries are only open to people who are members of the same club, society etc, or work or live on the same premises. For example; employees of a company (but not their families or friends), or members of a PTA (but not other parents of children attending the school).
There are regulations regarding selling of tickets and publicising and conducting a private lottery. For more information please download our guide to lottery applicants.

Small Lotteries incidental to an exempt entertainment

These types of lotteries can only take place in the course of an event which is considered ‘exempt’; for example; a village fete, disco or dinner. People attend the event rather than the raffle/lottery.

There are regulations for small lotteries with regard to the selling of tickets and publicising of and conducting the lottery. For more information please download our guide to lottery applicants.

If you decide your lottery does not meet the above definitions then you will need to apply for a lottery licence.
