SOME PC ENERGY FACTS

According to the Rocky Mountain institute you could save enough electricity by turning off a standard pc monitor and printer at night and over weekends to pay for the price of a computer within a few years!(from Earth Limited -50 simple things your business can do to save the environment, Greenleaf publishing)
  • turning off 10 monitors when not being used could save £200 a year in energy costs (from Earth Limited -50 simple things your business can do to save the environment, Greenleaf publishing)

  • Computer monitors use up to 50% of the total energy needed to run a p.c.
  • PCs, monitors and other office equipment not only use lots of energy but also generate lots of heat, raising temperatures above the optimum 19deg C. In non air-conditioned offices this means staff will often open windows, use desk fans (both wasting energy) to cool themselves down. In air conditioned offices this heat will put extra strain on the air conditioning system (also using more energy).

  • It is quite safe to switch off computers, monitors, printers and copiers, particularly if they are not going to be used for more than 15 minutes.
  • Some people may be reluctant to keep starting up/ shutting down computers due to time delay. In this case just switch off the monitors.
  • Screen savers definitely do not save energy, even if they are blank you energy is used to display a black screen!
