SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Sustainable living is about interdependence. We need to be aware of our actions and their consequences and make the necessary alternations to ensure our lifestyles are more compatible with the environment.

This may sound like a tall order, but in fact it is quite straightforward. We can all live a more sustainable lifestyle without feeling like we are going without, or that we need to make dramatic changes. Here is a list of adjustments you can make to your daily life to make it more sustainable - you will be surprised how easy some of these are to do!

  • Help reduce green house gases - If you can use public transport do. Taking the bus can save you the time and money spent looking for parking spaces. Alternatively share a journey with a friend or colleague instead of taking two cars, and if you are in stationary traffic switch your engine off.

  • Help reduce the waste stream, REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE - Reducing our waste saves raw materials, saves energy and reduces the amount of waste we send to landfill.

  • Be 'tree friendly' - We use a wide range of disposable paper products, try to use reusable cotton nappies, use handkerchiefs instead of tissues, and try to avoid using disposable plates. When purchasing paper goods opt for those made from recycled paper. Remember to print on both sides of the paper and use the backs of scrap paper for making notes. When you have finished with newspapers, magazines and office paper please recycle it. Send e-mails and e-cards to your family and friends.

  • Save water - When using washing machines and dishwashers please try and have a full load, or where possible opt for a half load to conserve water. Install water saving devices in your toilet cistern (they are often free from your water company and easy to install), take showers instead of baths, mend dripping taps and report water leaks to your local water company.
Water is one of our most precious resources - treat it with respect.

  • Be energy efficient - When replacing white goods opt for the most energy efficient products, not only are they environmentally friendly, but they could also save you money. Remember to turn lights off if you do not need them, and turn computers, TVs and hi-fi's off when you are not using them. If you are boiling the kettle for just one, use just enough water for one mug, do not fill the kettle up.

  • Ask for green products - A number of companies stock green products, these include products made from environmentally friendly materials and products made from recycled materials, if your local store does not stock these products ask for them to do so.
