Leisure Activities

Runnymede has excellent leisure facilities. There are many parks and open spaces which host all types of sports and provide a wide range of recreational facilities. The following is a list of the main pursuits available. (Additional details can be obtained from the Leisure Services Section at the Civic Offices on 01932 425682).

ANGLING

First class fishing is available in both the Thames and the Wey, as well as the quiet backwaters of both. Other fishing is available at Thorpe Park, Basingstoke Canal and the numerous gravel pits in the area. Local angling clubs own or share stretches of both waterways and the London Anglers' Association has fishing rights in the Wey Canal. The Borough Council leases two lakes to the Runnymede Angling Association at Ten Acre Lane and Chertsey Lane and membership is available to Borough residents of all ages.


BADMINTON AND SQUASH

Badminton and Squash are available at Addlestone Leisure Centre and Egham Leisure Centre.




BOATING

There are excellent facilities for boating along the Thames with boatyards adjacent to Chertsey Bridge. Rowing, sailing and motor boats may be hired and Salters river steamers also call at the lock near Chertsey Bridge and at the Bell Weir Lock, Egham, which has been reconstructed and is now the largest on the Thames. Boating is also available at Thorpe Park. Two clubs - Staines Boat Club and the Wraysbury Skiff Club - are located in the Borough. Boat trips are also available at the Runnymede Meadows.


BOWLS

Egham Bowling Club has an attractive green at Manorcrofts Road, just south of the town's railway station, together with an excellent indoor bowls arena. There are also greens at Victory Park (Addlestone), Ottershaw Memorial Playing Field, Chertsey Recreation Ground and Heathervale Recreation Ground (New Haw).Sports Directory


CANOEING

There are facilities along the Thames and the Wey Navigational Canal. The British Canoe Union HQ is situated in Addlestone.

CRICKET

Cricket pitches are located in several Council owned parks. The main private clubs are Chertsey, New Haw, Ottershaw, Hamm Moor, Englefield Green and Egham and an attractive programme of home matches is arranged. Surrey County Cricket Club play several County Championship and limited over matches at nearby Guildford each summer.

FOOTBALL

The Council owned parks, recreation grounds and playing fields provide numerous football pitches for local league players. Five-a-side is available at Egham Leisure Centre and Addlestone Leisure Centre and at Chertsey Recreation Ground. For spectators Chertsey Town and Egham Town are now senior clubs in the Borough, both competing in the Rymans (Ishmian) league. Numerous Premiership and Football League clubs in London are within easy reach whilst, closer to home, Woking have competed successully in Nationwide Conference in recent years.

GOLF

In addition to Wentworth, Laleham Golf Club, at Laleham Burway just north of Chertsey, is an 18 hole parkland course that welcomes visitors (except Sunday morning). Two 18 hole courses have been opened at Foxhills and established themselves as venues for majors tournaments whilst a public course at Green Lane, Addlestone is now well established.

HOCKEY

A grass hockey pitch is located at Victory Park, Addlestone.

PUTTING

There are putting greens at Addlestone's Victory Park; at the Recreation ground at Chertsey, Heathervale Recreation Ground, New Haw and at the Memorial Playing Field in Ottershaw.

SWIMMING

Swimming in the River Thames is discouraged as the river bed is not even and the currents can be deceptive. The swimming pool at the River Bourne Health Club, Chertsey is open to the public and there are also indoor pools at Staines, Woking, Windsor and Walton. Addlestone Leisure Centre has an outdoor heated pool which, following recent improvements, is available for an extended summer period.

TENNIS

There are public courts at Heathervale Recreation Ground; at Ottershaw Memorial Playing Fields; Addlestone Victory Park; Chertsey Recreation Ground; Gogmore Farm Park and at both Egham and Virginia Water. There are several tennis clubs throughout the district.

LEISURE CENTRES

The Local Authority has provided two Leisure Centres at Egham Leisure Centre and Addlestone Leisure Centre which cater for a wide variety of sports such as squash, badminton, aerobics, five-a-side football, basketball and weight and fitness training.
